Carlo Vialu, PT, MBA served as Director of Physical Therapy for the NYC Department of Education, where he oversaw a program with over 700 PTs working in more than 1,500 schools. He is project manager of research on normative data for five mobility tests for school-aged children, & co-founder of www.SeekFreaks.com.

 

Erin Iverson, PT, DPT, Board-Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist is a Certified CO-OP Instructor. She is an outpatient, pediatric physical therapist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC). She earned her DPT from Ohio University in 2010 and became a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Pediatric Physical Therapy in 2015. Erin is contributing to the development of the Clinical Practice Guideline for Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) sponsored by the APTA. She is also co-leader of the DCD Translating Research and Clinical Knowledge Team at CCHMC. She has a strong passion for spreading awareness of DCD and the CO-OP Approach to practitioners and caregivers in hopes of providing treatment to this under-diagnosed and under-served population.

 

Connie Johnson, PT, DScPT, ABPTS-Certified PCS is a school-based physical therapist, adjunct faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University and the creator of Fit4Work. Her primary areas of expertise are on health, wellness and participation in school and work environments for youth with developmental disabilities. She is an active member of the APTA, Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy and serves as Co-Chair of the Practice Development Committee and members of Adults with Developmental Disabilities and School Special Interest Groups and has co-authored numerous fact sheets. She has published in the areas of developmental disability, physical activity and use of the Guide to PT Practice in peer reviewed journals. She is the author of Fit4Work: Fitness for Vocational Tasks for Youth with Disabilities.

At the completion of the course, you are expected to:

      1. Identify 3 reasons to use tests and measures in school-based practice
      2. Determine 3 tests & measures that are appropriate for children with disabilities
      3. Select the appropriate interpretation of 2 tests and measures on the ability of children to participate in their education, ADLs, play or other meaningful activities, on given case scenarios
      4. Determine 3 benefits of CO-OP for motor skill acquisition
      5. Identify 3 types of client diagnoses that can benefit from the Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) approach
      6. Select 3 concrete CO-OP strategies that can help a child’s motor skills when participating in ADLs, recreation, or other meaningful occupation
      7. Select 3 baseline measures to determine the strength training needs of youth with disabilities for work readiness
      8. Identify 3 potential missing components for the work readiness of youth with disabilities
      9. Apply 3 evidence-based functional/strength training strategies that can be implemented in school and community settings to support employment participation given a case scenario
      10. Identify the 2 appropriate ways of assessing motor learning
      11. Describe the latest evidence with regards to at least 5 motor learning principles
      12. Determine ways to incorporate 3 motor learning principles into the home, community or school environment to promote ADLs, mobility, play & leisure or work skills.
