Jennifer Wissinger, PT, DPT serves early intervention and preschool children in Columbus, Ohio. She is a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Pediatric Physical Therapy with over 15 years of experience practicing in public school districts (preschool through high school), county board of developmental disability programs for adults, home health care, and early intervention. She has served as an instructor in the pediatric curriculum in the physical therapy program at Ohio State University, a mentor in a pediatric residency program, and in leadership roles in the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy. She enjoys engaging learners of all levels to use evidence and to work collaboratively in teams to serve children and their families.

 

Amy M. Schlessman, PT, DPT, DHS is a therapist working for almost 20 years primarily in the school-based setting, promoting physical activity embedded into academics, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the use of technology in therapy, while closely working with educators, administrators, therapists, and parents. She is an assistant professor in the PT program at University of Findlay. She has conducted numerous dynamic presentations for teachers, parents and therapists regionally and nationally. She also published an activity book, “Recycle Bin Boogie: Move and Learn with Recyclables,” which combines movement and learning with common, household recyclables.

 

Lara Collins Barros, OTD, OTR/L has been a school-based OT for over 25 years. She discovered the CO-OP Approach while completing her OTD at NYU and has never looked back. She had the privilege to develop “A Guide for Implementation: Using the Principles of CO-OP to Frame a Top-Down Approach with School-Aged Children” with the mentorship of Dr. Helene Polatajko of ICAN CO-OP.

 

Pam Stephenson, OTD, OTR/L, BCP, FAOTA has enjoyed working in various interprofessional teams across pediatric settings, including in schools and in early intervention, as well as in adult settings. Pam is a past Chairperson of the AOTA’s Children and Youth Special Interest Section (CYSIS). She currently teaches at Mary Baldwin University in Fishersville, VA.

At the completion of the course, you are expected to:

      1. Identify the purpose of using “time of day” (routines-based) approach in assessment of children with disabilities.
      2. Select two examples of matching the client’s desired outcome with a “time of day” intervention
      3. Determine two strategies for interventions that promote the child’s participation within a natural routine, in a given case study
      4. Determine 3 benefits of providing contextualized school-based services
      5. Select 2 assessment tools or strategies that are consistent with contextualized service
        provision
      6. Identify 3 strategies for embedding interventions into natural school contexts or environments
      7. Select 3 reasons for providing embedded services to improve a student’s performance and participation in the school environment
      8. Distinguish the importance of each of the 3 steps of embedding: observing, hypothesizing, and intervening
      9. Apply 3 evidence-based occupational therapy interventions in an embedded manner on a given case study of a student with disabilities
      10. Identify 2 benefits of movement across the International Classification of Function (ICF) model
      11. Identify 2 academic benefits to promoting movement throughout the school day.
      12. Determine 3 creative physical activities that can be integrated into academic concepts in the classroom, using common materials
