Amy Coopersmith, MOT, OTR/L, MA, Ed worked as an OT Supervisor, clinician and evaluator for the NYC Department of Education for 17 years. She is also a prolific lyricist, writing songs about Children’s Self-Determination and Mental Health. She is passionate about promoting children’s self-determination and has provided workshops at national conferences and online learning communities. Previously, Amy taught Pediatric Assessment and Treatment at Mercy College and worked for ten years as a teacher in New York City. When you ask Amy about a children’s mental health topic, she’ll tell you, “I’ve Got A Song for That!”

At the completion of the course, you are expected to:

      1. Identify at least 3 components of self-determination that can promote child’s participation in academics, self-care and play/leisure.
      2. Select 3 methods to incorporate self-determination into pediatric sessions.
      3. Determine 3 ways to utilize effective questioning to promote children’s independence and awareness.
      4. Identify 3 benefits of self-monitoring to the client’s participation in education, ADLs, play and leisure, and other meaningful activities
      5. Select 3 self-monitoring tools that can be incorporated in therapy interventions
      6. Determine 3 ways to modify the self-monitoring process for different client populations
      7. Select at least 3 ways for children to self-manage in order to promote participation in education, ADLs, play and leisure, work and other meaningful activities
      8. Identify the six-step approach to self-management that can be incorporated into therapy interventions
      9. Determine 3 ways to adapt self-management techniques for different populations.
      10. Identify 3 benefits of child-led home activity programs leading to client’s progress and participation in education, ADLs, play and leisure, and other meaningful activities.
      11. Identify three ways to partner with a child to develop a personalized child-led home activity program to increase their independence and goal attainment.
      12. Determine 3 ways to modify the process of creating a child-led home activity program for different client populations.
