Using SATCo for Adaptive Positioning Decisions
Determining Level and Types of Support
How do you make positioning decisions that optimizes function? In this webinar, Dr. Saavedra discusses principles of positioning based on a segmental approach. This approach combines information obtained from SATCo level of trunk control with concepts of open and closed kinetic chains to help clinicians recognize the impact of positioning decisions on upright postural control and function. Videos are used to demonstrate change in alignment and function when adaptations are made to positioning equipment. The webinar wraps up with the application of all the concepts learned via 2 case studies demonstrating a variety of positioning adaptations over time in two children. Closed Captioned in English

Sandra Saavedra, MS, PT, PhD is a pediatric researcher and Associate Professor at the University of Hartford. She has more than 25 years of clinical experience as a pediatric PT, and is a national leader in researching, teaching and applying segmental principles to treatment of posture impairments in infants all the way to older children, from those with mild to severe disabilities. She played a major role in the refinement and validation of the Segmental Assessment of Trunk Control (SATCo). She works with various clinical and school-based settings to apply SATCo principles to assessment, interventions, selection of adaptive equipment and measuring outcomes.

At the completion of the course, you are expected to:
-
- Identify three important positioning principles to improve upright control in a child with postural dysfunction.
- Identify how children use “closed kinetic chain” strategies to support their posture.
- Determine the starting level of external support to promote a child’s meaningful activities such as education, mealtime or others, on a given case scenario with SATCo scores.
